名言から学ぶ英会話 - Part. 5 -
少し過激な内容ですが、映画「独裁者」のラストを飾る約６分間もの壮絶な演説は、チャップリンが全世界の人々へ伝えたかったことです。その有名な演説シーンを、ほぼ直訳的に分かりやすく和訳してみました。
前半は、全世界の人々たちに訴えかける内容となっています。
I'm sorry but I don't want to be an Emperor.
（申し訳ない。私は、皇帝になどなりたくない。）
That's not my business.
（それは、私の仕事ではない。）
I don't want to rule or conquer anyone.
（誰かを規定で縛ったり、支配することはしたくないんだ。）
I should like to help everyone if possible, Jew, gentile, black man, white.
（可能であれば、私はみんなを支援したい。ユダヤ人も非ユダヤ人も、黒人も白人も。）
We all want to help one another, human beings are like that.
（私たちは人のために助け合うべきだ。人類とはそういうものだ。）
We all want to live by each other's happiness, not by each other's misery.
（私たちは他人の幸福と生きたい。不幸とではない。）
We don't want to hate and despise one another.
（私たちは他人を嫌悪したり、軽蔑したりしたくないんだ。）
In this world there is room for everyone and the earth is rich and can provide for everyone.
（世界には、全人類を支援するための富がある。）
The way of life can be free and beautiful.
（生きるとは自由であって、そして美しい。）
But we have lost the way.
（しかし、私たちはそれを見失っている。）
Greed has poisoned men's souls has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed.
（貧欲が人の心を毒し、嫌悪と共にそれぞれの世界観にバリケードを作る。そして我々を不幸や殺戮へと行進させた。）
We have developed speed but we have shut ourselves in, machinery that gives abundance has left us in want.
（私たちは発展し続けているが、自分自身を殻に閉じ込めている。豊富を生産する機械は、我々を欲求へと置き去りにする。）
Our knowledge has made us cynical, our cleverness hard and unkind.
（私たちの知識は皮肉さや頑固さ、そして不親切さを作り上げている。）
We think too much and feel too little, more than machinery we need humanity, more than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness, without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost.
（私たちは考えすぎで、直感が鈍っている。機械よりも人間らしさが必要で、利口さ・巧みさよりも親切さや穏やかさが必要だ。これらの性格をなくしたら、人生は暴力的でそして全てを失う。）
The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together.

The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men, cries out for universal brotherhood for the unity of us all.
（これらの発明品は人の良心や全世界の同志に呼びかける。）
Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world, millions of despairing men, women and little children, victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people.
（たった今も、私の声は世界中の何百万人もの絶望している男、女、子供、そして組織による罪のない犠牲者達に届いている。）
To those who can hear me, I say "Do not despair".
（私の声が届いている人々へ、私は言う。失望してはならない。）
The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed,
（我々から湧き上がる貧浴はやがてなくなる）
the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress, the hate of men will pass and dictators die,
（人類の誤った進歩に怯える人も、憎悪に溢れた人もいなくなり、やがて独裁者は死に絶える）
and the power they took from the people will return to the people, and so long as men die, liberty will never perish.
（そして、彼ら（独裁者）が人々から奪った人権は人のもとに戻り、そんな人（独裁者）が死にさえすれば、自由は決して失われることはない。）
次に、チャップリンの演説は、権力者の元で働く兵士たちへと語りかけます。
